iPhone 5 Sunday Coffee Break: Are You Cloudy On “The Cloud?”

You’ve heard a lot about the iPhone 5 getting “cloud storage,” but is all this talk of clouds a bit foggy for you? Join the first in a new series of free-flowing Sunday discussions — dubbed the “iPhone 5 Sunday Coffee Break” — to share your thoughts and impressions on cloud computing, and what it will mean for the iPhone 5.

Among the many rumored iPhone 5 features out there, the one that confounds and confuses people the most is the rumor of “cloud memory” or “cloud storage.” Even if you’re not an IT professional, you’ve probably heard the term cloud computing bandied about, particularly when it comes to business solutions and internet technology. But for as much as multi-billion-dollar corporations are looking to tap into this elusive “cloud computing” technology, its benefits extend past the business world, offering some groundbreaking capabilities for the likes of mobile computing devices alla the iPhone 5.

So, what is cloud computing?

The simplest way to explain it is like this: “the cloud” is a term used to describe when a user (whether it is one person or an entire organization of users) have access to shared reasources on systems other than their own. In this way, instead of being limited by whatever your computer’s storage capabilities are, you instead have access to vast amounts of storage on mega-sized data centers, while still having instant access to the data and files.

A very Appl’ish example is the old iDisk and newer MobileMe, which allows you to store big files on Apple’s data center. I continue to use it to store large, uncompressed music audio files that are notoriously mammoth and suck up hard drive space quickly.

iPhone 5 and The Cloud

Obviously, cloud storage on a home computer is convenient for exponentially expanding storage capacity. But mobile devices can benefit even more from cloud storage, since it allows the device’s design to remain lithe and streamlined, negating the need for battery-sucking onboard storage components. In this way, a cloud-ready iPhone user could tote around major data with them without needing a fanny pack-mounted hard drive tethered to their iPhone.

The good news is that the iPhone 5g is most likely getting this cloud thing.

There are plenty of reports out there that corroborate this claim: Apple’s eco-busting (just kidding) purchase of a huge data center in North Carolina, garnering of the catchy “iCloud” domain name and mentioning of iCloud in recent developer preview code for Mac OS X Lion, and a dandy report from our friends 9to5Mac that Apple and Verizon have been chatting about doing future iOS updates (ostensibly for the iPhone 5) over the air (OTA) — meaning that users will no longer have to plug into a computer to do their updates.

In this way, the cloud approach to storage and computing begins to fulfill Steve Jobs’ dream of mobile devices like the iPhone5 and iPad that could truly replace the personal computer; if they no longer need to interface with a computer for anything, they indeed become standalone mobile computing devices.

But if all this cloud computing banter is just too esoteric for you, there’s one very straightforward way to look at it from the perspective of the iPhone 5: look for the iPhone memory capacity to bump up from 16/32 GB to 128GB, or maybe even 256GB. That’s a lotta iTunes!

You probably know more about the cloud than I do. Or, maybe you don’t. iPhone 5 delay has holdouts re-eyeing Verizon, white iPhone 4

Hindsight is supposed to be 20-20, but those who skipped the iPhone 4 in 2010 or the Verizon iPhone in early 2011 with the expectation of being able to buy an iPhone 5 in June are now scratching their heads and still attempting to put together the puzzle pieces in order to figure out whether passing on the iPhone 4 was a mistake and whether taking the plunge now would be a corrective action or only compound their original (possible) mistake. Welcome to Apple, a company which does not discuss future unannounced products (except when it wants to), and has no intention of telling you when the iPhone 5 will see a release date (except that it kind of just did). Now it’s up to you to figure out whether you regret taking a pass, and whether you can fix it.

By any measure, Apple wants you to buy an iPhone 4 now instead of waiting. That’s why it pre-announced the white iPhone 4 release via Twitter. That’s why it’s releasing a white iPhone 4 at all. It’s not just about pushing a sought-after new color to market in the hopes of motivating people to take the plunge. It’s about telegraphing the fact that the iPhone 5 is clearly coming later than expected. Look at it this way: the white iPhone 4 is only a few days old, and yet June is three weeks away. Anyone who thinks Apple released the white iPhone 4 just for the sake of turning around and burying it that quickly is probably naive enough to end up on the wrong end of the buying spectrum one way or the other. So how long will the iPhone 4 era continue? A season sounds about right. Our guess is early September. But that’s just a guess, one you can act on if you like, but one which we’re not sure about so you shouldn’t be either.

It all comes back to whether you now think you blew it by not buying an iPhone 4 earlier on when you had the chance. The “reasons” many folks skipped the iPhone 4 (supposed antenna issue, supposed scratching issue) turned out to have never existed in the first place. Other issues which were real, such as the proximity sensor bug, were cleaned up in software updates. And the iPhone 4′s original lack of Verizon compatibility and a white noodle have since been cleaned up with subsequent hardware releases. In other words, the iPhone 4 is now everything you wish it had been at launch – plus you’ve learned that it never was a lot of things that detractors had claimed. But is it too late now?

The iPhone 5 will be here before the year is over. Buying an iPhone 4 now means that you’ll either have to pay through the nose for the iPhone 5g when it arrives (thanks to unsubsidized pricing), or you’ll have until late in the iPhone 5 era to nab one at standard pricing, or just skip the iPhone 5 altogether. Is that worth it just so you can get your hands on an iPhone 4 now? That’s your choice to make. Here’s more on iPhone5.

How Does AT&T Detect Unofficial iPhone Tethering?

As we’ve reported earlier, AT&T continues to clamp down on unofficial iPhone tethering, which is one of the main reasons users jailbreak their iPhone.

There has been a lot of debate and speculation on how AT&T detects the unofficial iPhone tethering. Android Police has provided some insight into how AT&T is able to identify users who are using the unofficial tethering option. Android Police explains:

Jailbroken iPhones typically use the same tethering technique as a standard iPhone, the one that’s already present in iOS. This method exposes tethering activity quite readily, because the iPhone, when in tethering mode, sends traffic through an alternate APN (AT&T access point/router) for the express purpose of identifying the traffic as tethered data. This makes it extremely easy for AT&T to identify whether or not an iOS device is utilizing tethering, and just how much of their data is consumed via tethering.

Some tethering applications for iOS make use of alternative methods and route tethered traffic through the phone’s normal data APN, but by and large, most jailbreakers stick with the stock application because it’s easy to use and doesn’t require any complicated setup. In fact, many iPhone users jailbreak for the sole purpose of avoiding AT&T’s tethering fees (for why, see next section). These are the people AT&T’s is going after.

According to Android Police, popular jailbreak apps such as MyWi and Tetherme use the tethering APN instead of using the normal data APN.

It’s not clear if PdaNet that has been updated recently to hide unofficial tethering by masking the packets uses iPhone’s normal data APN to go undetected (assuming it does). If PdaNet’s solution works then we’re quite sure that other developers will soon release an updated version of their jailbreak apps to stay ahead of the cat and mouse game with AT&T.

It is unfortunate that carriers are charging users for the tethering option or don’t allow some features or apps to work to use iPhone’s 3G data connection (work only over Wi-Fi). Ideally, we should be able to use the data the way we want as we’ve paid for it.

Report Claims iPhone 3GS is Outselling Flagship Android Phones

While the iPhone continues to be widely popular, each new device launch seems to come with a large amount of criticism. The original iPhone didn’t have a cut and paste feature, the 3G didn’t have video recording, and the 3GS only had a 3.2 MP camera without a flash.

Although its specs aren’t always cutting edge compared to its Android counterparts, the iPhone has been a handheld favorite since its inception. This fact is reiterated by a recent report that not only is the iPhone 4 the top selling smartphone for Verizon and AT&T, the 3GS is outselling top Android phones…In a note to investors this morning, Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley made some interesting comments regarding Apple’s smartphone. According to the analyst’s checks with retail sales channels, Apple’s previous generation iPhone is outselling Android powerhouses like the Motorola Atrix 4G.

“Interestingly, our April checks indicated continued strong demand for the iPhone 3GS at AT&T and iPad 1 at Verizon, as these older generation products with reduced prices often outsold new Android products.”

AT&T started selling the dated iPhone 3GS for $49 earlier this year, with a 2 year agreement. The promotion helped Apple sell nearly 20 million iPhones last quarter, as it was the cheapest that the popular smartphone had ever been offered in a retail setting.

“We believe this highlights Apple’s significant advantage, and these older products help Apple offer a tiered pricing strategy at key channels.”

Maybe Apple isn’t considering a cheaper iPhone at all. By selling their discontinued products at such a low price point, Apple is able to stay competitive against less expensive Android phones with entry-level features.

It’s funny how often Apple is criticized for being behind the technology curve with their iPhone line, but a phone that has been out for nearly 2 years is outselling dual core Android phones. Maybe the average person really doesn’t care about the specs.

QuizBlows: Google Maps apparently hates one Quiznos in Los Angeles

There are plenty of third party iPhone apps dedicated specifically to finding restaurants and stores near your current location, but the built-in “Maps” app still does a plenty serviceable job – most of the time, anyway. Tapping directly into Google Maps, the app allows you to type in something like “restaurant” and get a map showing the locations of surrounding eateries. But the other afternoon, upon finding myself in a strange neighborhood and needing gas, lunch, and a store, the Maps app managed to fail me in increasingly comical increments. And it all culminated with a restaurant which, according to Google, is known as QuizBLoWs.

I knew I was in trouble when I used the Maps app to determine whether a restaurant I’d spotted on the way in was within walking distance of my location. I’d guessed it was no more than about a quarter to a half a mile, so should I hoof it or should I be lazy and drive? The Maps app was all too happy to show me how to walk there: go north for a mile, cross the railroad tracks, go west for a half a mile, come back south across the railroad tracks, turn back toward my original destination and walk down Interstate 5 for awhile, and 2.4 miles of hoofing it later I’d be at the restaurant which was indeed about a quarter mile away:

Remembering I needed to stop for gas anyway, I drove. After lunch, the fun began. “I need to find a convenience store,” I thought. So I typed “store” into the Maps app and, sure enough, it found me several. From 7-Eleven to Starbucks, the app cheerfully showed me every kind of “store” it could come up with. Then I noticed it had also suggested a place which it referred to as QuizBLoWS. That alone made me curious enough to drive by the place, which turned out to be a standard fare Quiznos restaurant. Wow. Talk about pissing someone off, whether it be a rogue Google employee or some random hacker with a grudge who managed to hack Google Maps just a bit. Best I can tell this is the only Quiznos location to have been labeled with this comically derogative moniker, and it’s repeatable simply by typing “QuizBLoWs” into the Maps app on your iPhone or on maps.google.com on your computer. You have to wonder if those guys running that particular store even know what hit them. How many passersby are not eating there because it’s labeled that way in Maps? Then again, the only reason I did drive by the place was because of the way it was labeled. Of course I didn’t eat there, either.

Oh, and as far as finding gas? Typing “gas” into the Maps app, I was helpfully steered toward one name-brand gas station only to arrive and see that there was another name brand gas station on the other corner of the intersection. You have to wonder how one made it into Google Maps under “gas” and the other didn’t. On the other hand, I may have simply been visiting the worst-mapped neighborhood on the entire Google Maps planet. It happens. Google Maps is still the best online mapping service out there in my experience (anyone remember the comically awful days of having to rely on Mapquest?), but experiences like this only serve to show the challenges faced by manually attempting to map the globe and the kinds of things which can be omitted, mis-mapped, or comically mislabeled in the process.

If you have just purchased an iPhone 5 one of the first things that you need to look for is an iPhone 5 jailbreak. Most people know or have heard of the word jailbreak but many don’t realize the benefits.
With an iPhone 5 jailbreak you gain more control over you iPhone. You will have the ability to use non Apple approved apps which means you don’t have to rely on the iTunes store anymore. With an iPhone 5 jailbreak you will have Cydia installed on your iPhone and this is the best of the best when it comes to non Apple approved apps. In fact, some of the best iPhone 5 apps are to be found here because developers are tired of Apple’s strict controls and they aren’t bothering trying to get their apps approved.
